Heritage Inventory Mapping System

Welcome to the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Inventory Mapping System. In partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Statistics Agency (NLSA), this interactive tool is designed to help researchers, teachers, and visitors discover the vast range of displays and collections that exist in museums, archives and heritage sites across the province. It can also be used by government and community groups to identify interpretive gaps and guide efforts to those areas which are not being adequately interpreted.

To access, please visit: Opens in new window and click on the link to launch CIMS with the heritage layers pre-selected. The Inventory contains information on:

  • Museums
  • Archives
  • Provincial and National Historic Sites
  • Heritage Plaques

The information was gathered through a survey of members of the Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives. The Inventory lists the top 4 areas of displays and collections in order of most prominent to less prominent.

Search Features

As well, the Inventory includes two unique features:

  1. Time Travel Feature
This feature allows a user to select a departure community, select which types of heritage infrastructure they would like to visit, and a travelling time (up to 60 minutes) they want to search within.
  2. Topic Specific Search
This feature allows a user to select a topic and see what heritage organizations have displays or collections that relate to that topic (such as agriculture, boat building, mining, etc.).

For information on organizations, please visit the MANL Opens in new window or ANLA Opens in new window website. To report any inaccuracies or additions to the Inventory, please contact Lucy Alway at
