Creative Diversification: Newfoundland and Labrador Screen Industries

The Film and TV Production Industry is a generator of employment in Newfoundland and Labrador.  On average, over 70 per cent of the funds used to make large‐scale film and television productions are leveraged from outside Newfoundland and Labrador.  These national and international film and television specific investments are new money in the province’s economy that would go to production activity in other jurisdictions if not invested here. In fiscal year 2014‐15, $21.8 million in total production activity leveraged over $15.8 million of investment into the province’s film and television sector.  This fiscal 2015/16 production activity will exceed $41 million and this includes two television series and five feature films.

Connections are an integral part of the film industry. With the help of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development (BTCRD), the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation (NLFDC) has been focused on bringing local producers on Business Development Missions to new and previously attended markets. These markets include Los Angeles, Berlin, London, New York and Cannes. Each year their clients are building on their connections through these missions, which helps give their projects legs through co-productions with other national and international jurisdictions. These missions also enable the NLFDC to market Newfoundland & Labrador as a viable shooting location for guest productions.

For more information about the film and television industry, please contact Chris Bonnell, Executive Director/Film Commissioner with NLFDC at (709) 739-1637.
