Mid-Atlantic Business Development Network

Since January 2013, the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development (IBRD), the Aerospace and Defence Industry Association of NL (ADIANL), and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) have collaborated to increase in-market success in the US Mid-Atlantic market for Newfoundland and Labrador companies.  To facilitate these efforts, IBRD is providing a $100,000 investment to support the Mid-Atlantic Business Development Network (MABDN).

The MABDN is a mentoring program designed to assist Newfoundland and Labrador's small and medium-size businesses to take advantage of opportunities in the US (specifically, in Washington, DC; Maryland; and, Virginia), thereby increasing productivity and improving competitiveness. In-market consultants Dr. Tom Cellucci (Tom Cellucci and Associates) and Hatice Murphy (Infuze International) have been hired to facilitate the development of international business capacity and market access and supports through trade missions, sectoral export strategies, export skills development and educational activities.

Funding will be used to implement a collection of activities in support of trade in the defense and security sector; to foster market opportunities for local companies in the Washington, D.C. region; and, to equip NL participating companies with the necessary in-market knowledge for success in this targeted market.

Expression of Interest: New York Summer Fancy Food Show

IBRD is seeking Expressions of Interest to attend the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York June 29-July 1.

At North America's Largest Specialty Food and Beverage Event participants will discover 180,000 products including confections, cheese, coffee, snacks, spices, ethnic, natural, organic and more. Connect with 2,400 exhibitors from 80 countries and regions. In addition to the tradeshow, the Summer Fancy Food Show presents educational seminars addressing the basics of specialty food, social media marketing and other topics important to manufacturers, foodservice, and retailers. Sessions are hosted by experts in the specialty food industry and take place in New York City from Saturday, June 28 - Tuesday, July 1, 2014. SEUS-CP Alliance 7th Annual Conference and Business-to-Business Mission

In 2013, the annual SEUS-CP conference was hosted in Halifax, NS, and with more than 900 B2B meetings completed, it was one of the most successful conferences yet!  Following on this success, the 7th Annual SEUS-CP conference (happening in Raleigh, North Carolina) will take place from May 4-6, 2014, at the Raleigh Convention Center, with more than 250 Canadian and US business leaders participating. The conference will offer opportunity to network with key global leaders. Raleigh is an area with strengths in a number of sectors, including aerospace and defence, security, and ICT (including gaming and digital media).  Matchmaking will be focused on, but not limited to, these key sectors.  Additionally, there are significant military installations in North Carolina, which is home to the third largest military population in the US.

Business Development Mission: Education Sector

IBRD and ACOA are coordinating Newfoundland and Labrador participation in a Canadian mission to the International Financial Institutions (IFI) in Washington DC.

The mission is a joint effort of provincial international trade experts from across Canada, the Canadian Embassy in Washington, and the Canadian Executive Directors Offices to the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank. This mission will take place from May 7 to 9, 2014, and offers opportunity to become familiar with the bidding process for major projects in the education sector in developing countries.

Over the course of this mission, participants will take part in workshops and group meetings and will benefit from support in establishing contacts with key specialists responsible for preparing and implementing upcoming IFI projects. In addition to meeting with experts from the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank, this mission will facilitate connections with education sector companies and organizations from across Canada and in the DC area.

Export Discovery Series, Brazil Market Information Session

IBRD is partnering with ACOA; the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD); and, the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries (NATI), to deliver an information day targeted at sharing knowledge gained by NL companies and organizations in the Brazil market and building upon this knowledge with guest Brazilian speakers. Market experts will present at a breakfast session and will then be available for one-on-one meetings for the remainder of the day.

Accurate and reliable market intelligence gives companies the ability to make informed decisions and set realistic targets. The opportunities in Brazil are extensive, supported by market studies completed in 2011 and 2013. Previous NL mission participation and company success in Brazil has also given strong indication that there are opportunities in Brazil through contracts and sub-contracts with Petrobras due to their aggressive business plan. The impact of Petrobras spending $224 billion in five years is felt in all sectors within the Brazilian marketplace.
