Oceans MTS/IEEE 2015 – Sea Change: Dive into Opportunity

Organized by the Marine Technology Society (MTS) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Oceans Conference is considered one of the premier ocean-related events in North America. The conference features a partnership of engineering, technology and scientific researchers, and provides a forum for discussion of current developments in ocean research and technology.  Oceans ’15 was hosted in National Harbor, Maryland, and more than 150 exhibitors and 1,500 delegates with a broad international representation participated in the prestigious five-day event.

The Province has been participating in the Oceans MTS/IEEE conferences annually since 2006.  St. John’s, NL hosted Oceans ‘14, which was one of the largest Oceans MTS/IEEE conferences held in North America, and was also named 2014 Convention of the Year by Destination St. John’s.  The Local Organizing Committee received the Award of Distinction for their efforts in May 2015.  In addition, the MTS Newfoundland and Labrador Section, (represented by staff from BTCRD) was selected to receive the 2015 MTS Outstanding Section Award, which was graciously accepted at Oceans ’15.

Newfoundland participants reported that potential sales directly resulting from contacts made at the OCEANS’15 event could contribute to as much as $4 -$5.5 million of increased business over the next 3-5 years.  With such positive results, many participating companies have already expressed their interest to attend next year’s Oceans ‘16 in Monterey, California.

Business Development Mission to the United Kingdom (UK)

Where: London, England
When: March 14-18, 2016
Contact: Allison Dancey, (709) 729-7053

The Department is inviting participation in a March 14-18, 2016 trade mission to the United Kingdom (London). This international business development mission will include access to business-to-business (B2B) matchmaking services, in-market logistics, support of the Canadian High Commission London (CHC), and a networking event at Canada House for delegates and guests. The B2B service offers pre-travel research, qualified meetings, planning, in-market logistics, and post mission business follow-up. The B2B services will be available to SMEs with potential for growth and internationalization.

Planning for the March mission follows growing interest in the markets of the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) across many sectors. Despite slowing of world economies, “…the UK is experiencing a rise in real incomes and the longest streak of continued economic growth since the 2008 recession.” Financial Times, January 2016.

In addition to the deep historic and modern ties to the UK, similarities in language, political structure, cultural and legal/financial systems contribute to ease of business for Canadians.  The UK continues to be a leader in energy, defence and security, oceans technology, education, ICT/Big Data and cultural industries. In 2015, Forbes ranked London as “…the most influential city in the world.” based on access to capital, corporate headquarters, ease of travel, technology, media power and diversity.

The UK is a market of approximately 60 million and a potential gateway to continental Europe (700 million); it is increasingly important to Canada as the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) comes into effect. Many international events take place in the UK, and direct flights from St. John’s to London and Gatwick have eased business access.

Oceanology International 2016, the leading marine science and ocean technology exhibition, falls within the mission week. Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will be represented, and mission delegates will have access to Oceanology International 2016.

For more information on the UK market, contact Allison Dancey at (709) 729-7053.
