Business Development Highlight

Opportunities Abound in China

Nearly every aspect of life in Newfoundland and Labrador has been shaped in some way by the ocean. It is not just our history. It is in our nature – it's who we are.

- Susan Sullivan, Minister
Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

Building on the success of a June 2013 incoming ocean technology delegation from China, this June Newfoundland and Labrador's aquaculture, ocean technology, and oil and gas sectors welcomed a second visit by Chinese entrepreneurs, researchers and educators and seized an opportunity to create partnerships and do business in the world's second largest economy.   China is taking an unprecedented look at economic growth opportunities in its ocean environment.  By the end of 2020, the gross domestic product of China's marine industries, including offshore oil and gas exploration, marine transport, coastal tourism, fisheries and shipbuilding, is expected to exceed $814 billion US (China's Ocean Development Report – 2011).

Ocean Technology in China is an area of focus for IBRD and there are vast opportunities available for NL companies to pursue. In fact, IBRD just commissioned a piece of research to identify specific opportunities in the OT sector in Zhejiang Province – one of the Marine Economic Zones (MEZs) identified in China's current five-year plan.  Newfoundland and Labrador is home to a cluster of world-class companies offering some of the most innovative ocean technologies in the world and we are uniquely positioned to help develop China's burgeoning ocean technology industry.

If you are interested in learning more about ocean technology and the opportunities available in the Chinese market, please contact Bob Norman (709) 729-0598 or Kelly Day at (709) 729-5680.
